pleasant dreams (poem)

Written 10/5/17. Air/West

Text

peace is an illusion here

tell me you at least knew that

knew why my breath grows sharp

when you stare at me—

stop staring.

I like you, you know

and I keep coming back for more

you laugh with me, smile

and listen without questions

but that doesn't change tonight

don't ask me for answers

when I wake more sharply

than my breath ever gets when awake

don't touch me, don't comfort

when I start shaking from dreams

peace is an illusion here

I'll give you a smile, drink tea

in small sips while you hover

don't ask.

those were my nightmares, companions

you are my pleasant dreams
