Sonnet for Sword (poem)

Polar/Sword

Text

The scars upon your back are thirty-two
I've counted them at night while you have slept
These marks upon your body are not new
In silences, your secrets they have kept

The dreams that jerk you out of restive sleep
And glaze your eyes with pain are numberless
I hold you in my arms and do not weep
When you pull away in stubbornness

You do not wish to show me all your pain
Can't you see, my love, we are the same
We've both been scarred but did not bleed in vain

We were the weapons we were made to be
And only broke our chains eventually
But, my love, our children they are free
